Os Rostos desta Terra (Faces of the Land)

Artist in residency: CATUS CHAOS (Catarina Noronha)

This one-month artist residency focuses on the creation of large-scale painted portraits rooted in the relationship between land, memory, and people. Using mineral pigments and soil collected from the surrounding environment, the artist will paint on domestic fabrics such as old sheets and pillowcases.

The portraits will depict individuals who currently live on the land, as well as those who once did. By combining local materials with human presence, the works form a visual narrative shaped by place, history, and collective memory.

Goals

To create a direct material connection with the land through the collection and use of natural elements such as dirt and mineral pigments
To honor the history of the place by researching and portraying both past and present inhabitants
To explore themes of memory, care, and domestic ritual through fabric, performance, and installation, transforming everyday objects into carriers of identity and belonging

Exhibition & Public Presentation – Saturday May 30 2026

The final exhibition is inspired by a childhood memory from the artist’s grandmother’s home in Northern Portugal: a long clothesline in the backyard, filled with sheets drying in the sun, framed by mandarin and lemon trees.

During the exhibition, the portraits created throughout the residency will be hung on a clothesline, echoing this familiar Southern European landscape and evoking shared memories of home, care, and daily rituals.

The exhibition also includes a live performance in which fabrics—possibly belonging to the people portrayed—are washed and hung to dry alongside their painted portraits, creating an intimate dialogue between body, memory, and land.

Rostos desta Terra é um projeto artístico em residência que explora a relação entre território, memória e identidade cultural através de retratos pintados em tecidos domésticos. Utilizando solo, pedras ou outros pigmentos minerais recolhidos na aldeia e na quinta, a artista cria obras que representam pessoas que vivem — ou viveram — nesta terra.

Inspirada pelas memórias de roupa a secar ao sol nos quintais do norte de Portugal, a exposição final apresenta os retratos pendurados num estendal, evocando gestos de cuidado, pertença e vida quotidiana. A apresentação inclui uma performance participativa, onde a audiência é convidada a lavar roupa no antigo tanque comunitário da aldeira e cantar cantigas portuguesas.

19h00 Pátio das Histórias – Instalação audiovisual Markus Wild / Petit Cabaret – Mizinha

Arquivo de Granito é um projeto liderado por Markus Wild e e Mizinha que recolhe as memórias e histórias da comunidade através do testemunho de Gaspar, o seu membro mais velho. Por meio de registos áudio e vídeo, o projeto preserva narrativas ligadas às pedras, aos caminhos e aos lugares antigos da região.
Cada história revela fragmentos da memória coletiva e do património local.
“Granite Archive” transforma a paisagem num arquivo vivo de experiências e tradições.
